What Is Aquamation?

Aquamation, also known as alkaline hydrolysis or water cremation, is an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional cremation and burial. It involves placing the body in a chamber filled with water and an alkali, which, through a process called alkaline hydrolysis, accelerates decomposition. After several hours, all that remains are the bones and a sterile liquid solution, with the bones processed into ashes for return to the family. Unlike traditional cremation, aquamation has a lower carbon footprint, is energy-efficient, and does not release greenhouse gases or mercury into the atmosphere, making it an eco-friendly choice for end-of-life disposition. Availability may vary depending on local regulations and funeral providers.
